For the correction of prominent ears – a simple and customised treatment with predictable results.
What are prominent ears?
Prominent ears is a term used when ears stick out from your head more than you would like. Prominent or protruding ears are thought to affect approximately 1-2% of the population, which is about 100 million people worldwide. Fortunately, there is a way to get the ears you have always wanted.
- Minimally invasive treatment
- Performed under local anaesthetic
- Correct prominent ears in approximately 20 minutes
- Customisable approach for individualised treatment
- Predictable outcome that is permanent
- Reversible, if necessary.
earFold™ is an innovative medical device, designed to treat both adults and children (as young
as 7 years of age) for the correction of prominent ears, with or without asymmetry. earFold™
received a CE mark for commercialisation in Europe in April 2015, and has so far been made
available to plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists, and maxillofacial surgeons trained in the use of
earFold™, primarily in the UK.
As background, the development of earFold™ was led by Dr Norbert Kang, a consultant plastic
surgeon based at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Following a complex outcome after a
standard otoplasty procedure, he was motivated to create an effective and evidence-based
treatment option for prominent ears that could deliver immediate and predictable results for
patients without the risks that are often associated with more traditional corrective methods due
to the use of a general anaesthetic.
Prominent or protruding ears are thought to affect approximately 1-2% of the population,
which is approximately 100 million people worldwide. Prominent ears can have a considerable
psychological impact on a person’s life. Insecurities about appearance, teasing, or bullying can
lead to a loss of confidence and psychological distress – especially in children. The current
treatment options are limited, with the most conventional being otoplasty (or pinnaplasty), and
earFold™ gives physicians an additional option with specific benefits to offer their patients.
